Freud called this hidden realm the unconscious, while Carl Jung called it the 'shadow.'

Regardless of our terminology, this repository of our deepest secrets is a treasure trove for those who take the time and energy to explore it. Here, we store unpleasant or potentially traumatic events and the hidden talents we've locked away since childhood. When we unlock this treasure chest and examine its contents, we open ourselves to a world of new and hopeful possibilities.

How often do we play it safe? We pursue education to prepare for the future. However, it can lead to stagnation, complacency, and isolation. We tend to forget the childlike wonder of exploring the world around us, filled with imagination and a willingness to try new things.

Some of my most rewarding experiences in life have come from taking a leap of faith, trusting that the universe would help me soar rather than fall. As a child, I believed I could fly. I remember running through the soft grass in the backyard and jumping, waiting for the possibility of taking flight. I would also jump off the arm of a chair in the living room, hoping the added height would help me find my wings.

It is essential to hear the deep voice within us, even when it presents what appears to be impossible. The Wright brothers’ perseverance and tenacity allowed them to achieve flight despite speculation and disbelief. If they had remained stuck in the status quo, we would not have the ability to travel around the world by air. The world’s greatest and most impactful inventions arose from what was once considered unfeasible.

Where does that voice, innovation, and inspiration come from? Jung described the inner place of wisdom and understanding as the collective unconscious, a resource filled with vast knowledge and expertise greater than any one person's thoughts and capabilities. When we tap into that resource, we unlock the treasure chest, unsure of what we find.

We can then examine each piece inside the chest, exploring what we want to bring into the world. Do we need rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or diamonds? Each serves a different purpose and holds its unique value.

As we approach Spring, more flowers bloom, filling the air with a sweet, enchanting perfume. The seeds we planted are coming to life, bursting through the soil and reaching towards the sun’s bright, nourishing light. Living in tune with nature, this season beckons us to attune ourselves to nature's rhythm—a reminder that it is our time to bloom and flourish.

It's a time to bring the goals we set at the beginning of the year to life. Just as we nurture the young seedlings we planted, we can also nurture our growth. By removing barriers that hinder our progress, engaging in self-care, and doing what brings us joy, we can blossom into our best selves, like a flower in full bloom. The beauty of personal growth is a magnificent sight to behold, radiating hope and potential, and it's well within our grasp.

Now is the time to cultivate our dreams with intention. Perhaps our goal is to eradicate debt, which requires planning and commitment. One must develop a steadfast budget and explore new revenue avenues to nourish that goal. An efficient approach to debt repayment is Dave Ramsey’s snowball method. Imagine gathering snow—at first, just a small flake, but as it rolls down a hill, it gathers momentum and mass. This method encourages paying off the smallest debts first, allowing that momentum to carry us to larger debts, making the daunting path seem manageable and even exhilarating.

Over the last few weeks, I have gradually brought my beloved plants home from the office. Despite the upheaval of change, they are adapting remarkably, continuing to grow and thrive in their new surroundings. Much like these resilient plants, we humans possess an innate ability to adapt to shifts in our circumstances. We can discover comfort and foster growth in new environments. With time, patience, and a sprinkle of love, we can thrive in our own 'homes'—wherever possible.

Understanding the dynamics of relationships, even the complicated and messy ones, can be empowering. Despite the statistics showing that many relationships end in divorce or friendship breakups, achieving balance is the key to maintaining and sustaining healthy connections. This knowledge enables you to enhance your relationships and navigate them with confidence.

Unbalanced Relationships

There are many words to describe a person who overfunctions in a relationship: codependent, enmeshed, workaholic, and family hero. These terms emphasize doing for others what one can do for oneself.

Codependency arises when relationships become unbalanced. Typically, one partner takes on caretaking roles for the other person. Even after ending one relationship, they often enter another where similar patterns reappear.

Overfunctioning occurs when one partner assumes more than their fair share of responsibilities in the relationship. This partner might pay the bills, handle the housework, and act as the primary caregiver for the children. Over time, this can lead to burnout and resentment toward the partner who contributes less.

This dynamic is also evident when parents do too much for their children instead of teaching them responsibility. For instance, a parent might take care of all the chores and prepare all the meals. This deprives children of the opportunity to learn essential life skills, such as keeping their space clean and cooking.

I frequently replied with either an astronaut or a teacher during my childhood. Ultimately, neither of these paths became my reality, although I spent a few years as an adjunct professor, and my son is pursuing a career in education.

Once a career path is chosen, we begin taking steps toward our goal, increasingly feeling our future is within our grasp.

How fitting that it snowed on the Snow Moon? After a warm period in which the temperature was in the 60s a couple of weeks ago, we are retreating into the warmth and coziness of our homes. One of my favorite things is curling up under a blanket in front of the electric fireplace. I am doing that right now as I put the finishing touches on this article.

We have a snow day, a delightful reminder of the eager anticipation we felt as children, watching the bottom of the television screen, hoping to see our school’s name, signaling a day at home. Snow days were joyous retreats from the daily routine, filled with the comforting sounds of Price is Right and Days of Our Lives, the satisfaction of putting puzzles together, and the enchantment of reading books. The joy of those days still lingers in our memories, bringing a warm smile to our faces.
