Fleeting Existence
Infusing life with meaning
Time flows like a river, marked by a rhythmic dance of sunrises and sunsets. As I pen these thoughts, I can’t help but acknowledge that yet another month is drawing to a close, prompting me to pause and reflect on how I navigated the days of May.
In my course, the Five-Year Plan, we focus on crafting a life filled with meaning over the next five years. Without direction, we often find ourselves allowing precious moments to slip by, unclaimed and unexamined, which may lead us to live in a stagnant life. However, there lies an empowering choice before us: we can consciously decide how to fill our days with purpose and intention, laying the foundation for the life of our dreams.

The Dash
One of my favorite poems is “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. It eloquently describes the essence of our fleeting existence on Earth by highlighting the significance of the dash between the dates marking our birth and our passing. This simple punctuation symbolizes the precious time we have, reminding us that we can shape a meaningful life during our brief journey.
One way people infuse their lives with meaning is through creating. Creation serves as an outlet for expressing our innermost selves to the world, transforming abstract concepts into tangible forms. Through artistic endeavors, innovative projects, or even everyday problem-solving, we can forge impactful solutions that resonate beyond ourselves, leaving a mark on our communities and the world at large.
Learning, too, is a path toward personal growth. With every piece of knowledge and each skill we hone, we enhance our own lives and empower those around us. By sharing what we learn, we contribute to a collective pool of wisdom that enriches our interactions and deepens our understanding. Integrating new insights into our existing knowledge base opens doors to improved methods and innovative approaches that drive us forward.
Connecting with others is another way to add meaning to our existence. Our relationships fulfill our needs for belonging, validation, and purpose. When we express emotions with those we care for, we build bonds that heal our hearts and create a support network. The act of giving, whether it’s our time, resources, or kindness, infuses our lives with richness and fulfillment, transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences.
We add meaning to life by anchoring ourselves in the present moment. This transition from a frantic state of “doing” to a serene realm of “being” heightens our awareness of the here and now. By letting go of distractions, those incessant thoughts and sounds, we reduce stress and free ourselves from regret. In this serene mental space, we open ourselves up to enjoy the simple pleasures life offers. We appreciate the blooming flowers, singing birds, and playful rabbits in the yard. Each moment becomes a treasure, inviting us to savor the beauty that surrounds us.
Final Thoughts
Time has a way of slipping through our fingers faster than we often wish. When we consciously choose to live intentionally, we discover joy and fulfillment. In our quest to build a meaningful existence, we can invest our time in a variety of enriching activities, such as creating, learning, nurturing our relationships, or immersing ourselves in the present moment.
Even setting aside a few moments each day to devote to something we are passionate about can enhance our sense of purpose in life. This small commitment can transform ordinary days into extraordinary experiences, reminding us of what truly matters during our dash.
