Restorative Letter Writing

Releasing pain and resentment to make room for forgiveness, peace, and success

As we delve deeper into our theme of release, we turn our attention to the practice of restorative letter writing. Through this process, we unearth and release lingering resentments we may have harbored for months, years, or even decades.

Restorative letter writing acknowledges the emotional pain inflicted by another person. In this letter, we articulate the emotions we experienced as a direct result of their hurtful actions, including anger, betrayal, sadness, and confusion.

Once we have expressed these emotions, we release them through forgiveness. As we invite understanding of the other person’s behavior and the reasons behind it, we open ourselves to empathy. In this newfound space, the heaviness of past hurts begins to dissipate, making room for feelings of gratitude to emerge in the space that previously held hurt and resentment. This process allows us to find peace and healing within ourselves.

Letter

Have you ever written a letter to someone and burned it? As we explored in a previous session, letter writing provides emotional release. In that exercise, we crafted heartfelt love letters to ourselves, thereby fostering self-compassion. Today, we will focus on writing restorative letters to others. It is important to remember that these letters are meant for your process and will not be sent to the person we are writing about.
